Occupational Therapy Team Leader

Hi, I'm Sam! I'm the OT Team Leader at All Things Therapy and have been an Occupational Therapist for around 12 years. I'm relaxed, down-to-earth and passionate about helping people understand themselves and find practical supports that work for them. I particularly enjoy sensory processing, executive functioning and parent coaching. Outside of work, you'll usually find me spending time with my family, playing soccer or hanging out with Mila, our sausage dog!

A Little About Me

One of the things I love most about being an Occupational Therapist is that no two people, sessions or days are ever the same!

‍

There's a big problem-solving and creative side to OT that I really enjoy. I love getting to know people, understanding their strengths, interests and what matters to them, then working together to find ways to make everyday life a little easier or more meaningful.

‍

‍

My Clinical Interests

I'm particularly passionate about supporting neurodivergent people across the lifespan.

I love helping people better understand themselves, their strengths and needs, and the 'why' behind some of the things they experience.

‍

I particularly enjoy working with adults around sensory processing, executive functioning and energy mapping.

‍

Parent consultation and coaching is another area I'm really passionate about. I love working alongside parents to better understand their child and find practical strategies that genuinely fit their family and everyday life.

‍

‍

My Approach to Therapy

I'd describe my approach as relaxed, flexible and very person-led. I usually have a few ideas about what we might do during a session, but I don't like to plan too rigidly. I'd much rather be guided by the person in front of me, how they're feeling that day and what's important to them in that moment.

‍

Something that was relevant two weeks ago might not be what someone needs today, and that's completely okay!

‍

I'm also a big believer in coaching and collaboration. People are the experts in themselves, and parents know their children far better than I ever will. I bring my OT knowledge and ideas, and we work together to figure out what might actually help.

‍

For me, therapy should be useful beyond the hour we spend together. If someone leaves with a better understanding of themselves, or a parent feels more confident in supporting their child, that can make a difference across so much more of their week.

‍

‍

My Favourite Therapy Activities and Resources

This really depends on who I'm working with! For sensory and play-based sessions, I love anything messy. Shaving cream, slime, sensory trays and painting are always favourites. The adjustable coloured lights in our therapy rooms also get plenty of use!

‍

For older clients, definitely a whiteboard. I mind map everything! I love being able to take thoughts and conversations out of our heads and put them somewhere we can see, organise and make sense of them.

‍

And of course, a gym ball or peanut ball! They can become bowling balls, cannonballs, steamrollers for squishes or even an alternative chair. There are so many possibilities.

‍

‍

Something I Wish Everyone Knew About OT

Occupational Therapy doesn't have one particular 'look'. We're definitely not a one-size-fits-all profession, and what we do should depend on the person, their preferences, needs and what's important to them.

‍

Sometimes OT might look like messy sensory play or an obstacle course. Other times it might involve sitting on a couch having a conversation, cooking a meal, mapping something out on a whiteboard or working alongside a parent. We get to know the person first and go from there.

‍

‍

Before Your First Session

There are no big goals or expectations for your first session with me. It's really just an opportunity for us to meet each other, start getting to know one another and make me a little less of a stranger!

‍

You don't need to arrive ready to jump straight into therapy. If you leave that first session feeling a little more comfortable and with a better idea of what your OT journey might look like, I consider that a win!

‍

Outside the Therapy Room

‍

‍

‍

What do I enjoy doing outside of work?

I love playing soccer, going to the gym and catching up with friends and family over delicious food and wine.

‍

I'm also a big fan of family adventures! That might mean camping, heading down the river, going for a walk or bike ride, or finding different community events and activities to explore.

‍

‍

What's my favourite food?

Vietnamese or Thai food! I honestly don't think I could choose between them.

‍

‍

What's on my playlist?

Gang of Youths has been a longstanding favourite of mine. They're my go-to for housework, going for a run or heading out on a solo drive.

‍

Their song Let Me Down Easy holds a particularly special place in my heart because both my children were born while it was playing!

‍

‍

What's my favourite movie or TV show?

I'm terrible at picking just one favourite, but I do love a good drama or romance!

‍

‍

Do I have any pets?

Yes! I have an 8-year-old miniature dachshund, also known as a sausage dog, called Mila. She loves food more than anything else, will happily bark at anyone who comes to the door and absolutely loves being stopped for a pat on our walks. She'll also snuggle into our laps at any opportunity she gets!

‍

‍

What does my ideal weekend look like?

A little bit of everything! I love getting outside with my family, whether that's going for a walk, bike ride or an adventure somewhere new.

‍

I also enjoy catching up with family and having some time to get the house clean and organised before another busy week.

‍

One of my favourite things is our slow Sunday mornings. It's the one morning of the week when we have breakfast together and watch a movie in the lounge room with the kids.

‍

‍

Am I a beach, mountains or city person?

All of them! There's a time and place for each.

I do particularly love being in nature, whether that's around the water, in the mountains or out in the bush.

‍

‍

Where would I love to travel?

Italy! It's been on my travel list for a very long time, but I haven't managed to get there yet. Hopefully one day!

‍

A Few Fun Facts

‍

‍

‍

Something you might not know about me...

I started playing the violin when I was just two years old! I don't pick it up nearly as often as I'd like to these days.

‍

Another fun fact is that I spent the first two years of my OT career working in country South Australia, across the Mid North, Yorke Peninsula and Flinders Ranges.

‍

‍

Do I have any hidden talents?

Water skiing! I grew up spending lots of time down the river and have been water skiing since I was about six years old.

‍

‍

Something I'm surprisingly good at?

Planning and organising! Whether it's writing lists, packing, planning a holiday or setting up an organisation system at home, I'm pretty good at making it happen. I wouldn't necessarily say I enjoy every part of the process, but I definitely enjoy having everything organised.

‍

There are tubs and organisational systems everywhere in our house! I also love drawing and being creative. I'm by no means an artist, but it's something I've always enjoyed.

‍

‍

If I could have any superpower...

I'd love to be able to fly! I feel like it would be the most incredible feeling in the world.

‍

‍

What's my go-to karaoke song?

Fun fact, I've actually never done karaoke! The closest I've come is playing SingStar on the PlayStation when I was younger.

‍

‍

Something that always makes me smile?

Looking back at photos and videos of my kids, small gestures and acts of kindness, and seeing people having a genuinely good time and being unapologetically themselves.

‍

‍

If I could instantly learn a new skill...

I'd love to speak another language! Honestly, any language. I think it would be amazing to be able to communicate fluently in a second language.

‍

‍

Three things you can always talk to me about...

Food, dogs (especially sausage dogs!) and whatever you're currently really interested in! I genuinely love hearing people talk about the things they're passionate about and learning about interests I know absolutely nothing about.
